Will Super8Sound(the company) let you buy their pro8mm film and have it processed but not telecined and send you back the negative? What about then doing the video transfer yourself?

    As far as I know...yes.

It's difficult to transfer yourself because it is a negative print...not a positive print.

So the question becomes...if I go to a small town and pump my own gas...will the gas station let me leave without getting a tune-up an oil-change.....yes....because you'll probably be back...since no one else in that town does it.

Although in LA you can find a couple of other transfer places....you probably are better off using them because they do it exclusively and they don't charge extra for the gate.

Super-8 would really explode if the hourly transfer price were less than the $250.00 (or more) that it currently costs.

It may not seem like the best idea, but my video camera does ngative mode as well as 1/15th of a second shutter which I have used to successfully transfer 16mm with. No apparent flicker. I only becomes a problem when transfering work shot with crystal sync. It's about the worst kind of transfer you can do but still. Does anyone make a crystal sync projector by chance?

It would be nice if there was a film scanner made just for transfering filmstrips to a computer. By scanning one picture at a time and then assembling them together in the software to play back a whatever frame rate you choose. That would be great. It wouldn't be that expensive either. 35mm Film scanners go for a couple hundred. But nothing for transfering motion film. It would just need to be developed.

You can really get some projectors crystal synced.

The easyest way is the Elmo GS1200MO. It has an in-built synchronizer and a one-pulse-per-frame input. That means, that the projector will sync itself up to any frequency at the sync input (inside the regulation range, obviously). If you connect a crystal generator with an 24 Hz output (or 30 Hz output, Europe 25 Hz output) and TTL signal level, the projector will run crystal synced.

Other, cheaper projectors can be modified without any major efforts, you need to find an external synchronizer for projector regulation. This exists for the Braun Visacustic. His sync plug provides the projector?s actual framerate and an input for motor speed regulation. A synchronizer with an crytal generator at it?s input will sense the actual projector?s framerate and correct the motor?s speed accordingly.

The Bauer Studioclass projectors (T502, T525, T610) use the same motor control system as the Braun. They can be modifyed to work compatible with the Braun synchronizer.
